ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Mairee
Pantzer, enters the 2007-2008 season for her second year as Children's Chorus of
Maryland's new Artistic Director. After receiving her Bachelor of
Music in Voice Performance from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music in
Chicago, Mrs. Pantzer served for four years as the Music Educator for the
Chicago Mennonite Learning Center. During that time period, she also
freelanced as a professional musician and served as Music Director for the
Hyde Park Vineyard Church (Chicago, IL). In the summer of 2002, she
completed graduate courses in Dalcroze, Orff and Kodály
methodology from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. Mrs.
Pantzer moved to Baltimore in 2004 to serve as CCM's Assistant Artistic
Director and Teacher. She has enjoyed serving as an adjudicator for
Baltimore County Choral Assessments and conducting choral festivals both
locally and nationally. Completing her Kodály certification studies,
she studied at both the
American Kodály Institute and James Madison University. In 2007,
Mrs. Pantzer began her graduate studies at University of St. Thomas (St.
Paul, Minnesota), pursuing a Master of Music Education in Choral Studies
degree. She is a member of ACDA and OAKE,
and serves as Member at Large for Maryland’s Kodály Chapter (MUSIK)
and as a Panelist for the Maryland State Arts Council.
Mairee (pronounced "Mary") plays the flute and the piano, enjoys reading and travel.
Mairee lives with her delightful husband in
Baltimore City. EDUCATION DIRECTOR
Betty
Bertaux is the founder of the Children's Chorus of Maryland for
which she was Artistic Director for its first eleven years and again
from 1999 - 2006. Regarded as
an authority on vocal and music development in children, in the summer
of 2001 she was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Music Education
from Vandercook College of Music, Chicago, for her contribution to the
field of choral music education. Dr. Bertaux also holds the degree of
Master of Music with Kodály Emphasis from Holy Names College, Oakland,
the degree of Master of Music in Composition from the Shepherd School
of Music, Rice University, Houston, and a Certificate of Study with Dr.
Edwin E. Gordon in Music Learning Theory from Temple University, Philadelphia.
A former faculty member of Peabody Conservatory and Holy Names College,
she has just completed her twentieth year as a member of Vandercook College
of Music's summer MECA faculty. Professionally active for 40 years, Dr.
Bertaux has worked with music students of all ages and, along with her
continued interest in working with young singers, is currently active
in teacher training. She is also internationally established and frequently
commissioned as a composer and arranger of music for treble choirs. Her
music is published by Alliance Music Publishers, Houston, TX and she is
editor of the Betty Bertaux Choral Series published by Boosey &
Hawkes, New York. Having trained and conducted children's choirs of all
skill levels, she is widely experienced as a guest conductor and choral
adjudicator. Her successful career has been built on the belief that a
children's choral director can guide young singers toward a life enriched
by music through an instructive, artistic and joyful singing experience.
GENERAL DIRECTOR
Ramona
Galey
joined the Children's Chorus of Maryland in the fall of 2000. Ms. Galey's
experience in project management, finance and computer systems, as well as
her thorough knowledge of the arts both as an administrator and as a
performer, combine to create the breadth of knowledge and experience
required of management personnel in the arts and education fields. As a
professional trumpet player for many years, Ms. Galey performed as
Principal Trumpet with the Boise Philharmonic and Second Trumpet with the
Women’s Philharmonic, as well as numerous chamber brass groups in
Maryland and California. Ms. Galey holds a Master of Music degree in
Orchestral Performance from Rice University and a Bachelor of Music
Education from Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. She also
holds a Certificate in Project Management and a Masters Certificate in
Leadership in Nonprofit Management, in addition to numerous college
courses, workshops and seminars in accounting, business law, nonprofit
development, systems analysis, and nonprofit development and grant-writing.
OPERATIONS MANAGER
Katie Dott, a former Children’s Chorus parent, returnsto CCM in the newly created position of Operations Manager. Katie
received her Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing from Loyola
College and earned a Master of Science in Education from the Johns Hopkins
University. Most recently she worked as an Administrator and Curriculum
Developer at Camelot Learning, an after school remedial program. As a
teacher, she was named Department Head for the math and science program for
children with emotional disorders at Kennedy Krieger Institute Extended
Therapeutic Day Program. Additionally, she served as the Program
Coordinator at Johns Hopkins University and Department Administrator at the
Peabody Conservatory Computer Music Department and Studio.
CONCERT MANAGER
Andrea Burgoyne joins the staff after 12 years as a CCM parent
and volunteer. Andrea
wears many hats, in and out of the world of music.
After receiving her music degree from Towson University as a vocal
performance student under Ruth Drucker (Summa Cum Laude), she co-taught the
Early Music Ensemble at Towson U., served as assistant to the director of
the Festival Chamber Players, accompanied lessons and classes at TU, and maintained
a private studio of voice and piano students. She has performed with the
Annapolis Opera, the Baltimore Symphony Chorus, as soloist and chorus member
with the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and on one extraordinary occasion,
under the baton of Leonard Bernstein in a performance of Mahler's
"Resurrection" Symphony. More
recently she has continued to teach and perform, while also working as a
trust officer in the field of higher education grants.
In her volunteer life she has served as board member and President of
the Child Study Association of Maryland, and on the boards of the Towson
University Alumni Association, Children's Chorus of Maryland, and several
other organizations.
She is active as both a Girl- and Boy Scout leader, and is a winner
of the Natalie Hoffman award for her volunteer service.
2006 marks her 28th year as Soprano soloist at St. John's Episcopal
Church in Glyndon.
Andrea is the mother of two children:
Mirielle, a dancer and CCM graduate, and Devon, currently in CCM's
Concert Choir. Her husband, Kenneth Goldstein, is a violinist with the BSO, and
Concertmaster of the Maryland Philharmonic and Baltimore Choral Arts
Society orchestras.
FACULTY
Katie Cole joins the faculty of the Children’s Chorus of
Maryland this year as the teacher for Beginner I, Intermediate I, and Solfa
I classes. She is employed by
the Carroll County Public Schools where she teaches elementary vocal music.
In addition to her full time teaching duties, she holds an after
school advanced music class for selected students and directs the Carroll
County Children’s Chorus MusicMakers I as well.
Although Katie began her music training as a flutist, her love of
singing led her to study both flute and voice as an undergraduate in
college. She enjoys performing with the Frederick Flute Choir, Masterworks
Chorale of Carroll County, and the early music ensemble Musica
Schola. Katie has received the Bachelor of Music Education and K-12
Vocal and Instrumental Certification from Towson University.
This summer she began work toward the Master of Music Education with
Kodály Emphasis at The Hartt School of Music. She is a member of O.A.K.E.
(Organization of American Kodály Educators, M.E.N.C. (Music Educator’s
National Conference), M.U.S.I.K. (Maryland United Specialists in Kodály)
and ECMMA (Early Childhood Music and Movement Association.)
Suzannah Bauer teaches K-8 general
music at Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke’s School and pre-K/Kindergarten music at
Hampstead Hill Academy. She has also taught in the Early Childhood Division
of the Peabody Preparatory. She received early training in music as a
student and chorister of Children’s Chorus of Maryland. With a deep
appreciation for the music education and performance opportunities she
enjoyed while growing up in CCM, she chose to pursue a career in music
education. She attended Eastern University in St. David’s, Pennsylvania,
graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. With a
special interest in early childhood music, she became trained as a Music
Together® teacher and is now Center Director with Music Together®.
Suzannah also has a strong interest in writing. She is a published author
and Senior Editor of Square Halo Books. This summer she began studies
toward a Master’s degree with Kodály Emphasis at Loyola College in Maryland.
Jennifer Jordan,
now entering her seventh year on the CCM faculty, will teach the Beginner
II, Intermediate III, and Solfa II classes. Ms. Jordan received her
childhood music training at Children’s Chorus of Maryland, beginning at
the age of six and graduating at the age of sixteen. She subsequently
attended Towson University where she finished as a voice major with the
degree of Bachelor of Science in Music Education. Currently, Ms. Jordan is
pursuing her masters in music education at the University of
Michigan. Her full time teaching position is at Loyola Blakefield
Highschool where she has served for the past eight years not only as
Director of Choral Activities, but also as Music Director and Conductor
for the school’s outstanding annual musical productions. Her high school
choirs there have received superior ratings at national festivals in New
York, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Ms. Jordan holds Kodály
Certification from The American Kodály Institute at Loyola College in
Maryland. She is a member of the Maryland Music Educator’s Association,
the American Choral Director’s Association, and the VoiceCare Network.
ACCOMPANIST
Patricia
McKewen Amato is currently a coach/accompanist for the voice
division at Towson University
and Instructor
of Choral Studies for the American Kodaly Institute Masters Degree program
at Loyola College. For
sixteen years she
served as music
director at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and from 1994-2004, she was the director of choral
activities at Hood College. Ms. McKewen Amato maintains an active
performance career in the Baltimore and Washington areas
and occasionally serves as an adjunct opera coach at Peabody
Conservatory. In 2005, she
performed The Carnival of the Animals with the Maryland Symphony
Orchestra. She has accompanied the Annapolis Chorale, the Goucher
College Chorale, Young Audiences of Maryland Kinder-Opera Theater, and the
Baltimore Symphony Chorus. Ms. McKewen Amato is featured as pianist on
many recordings, including Music I Heard With You, with mezzo
Gwendolyn Lentz, Italian Love Songs, with tenor Ray Hornblower, and Instruments
of Peace, with the St. Thomas More Contemporary Music Ensemble. Her
extensive operatic experience includes duties as coach and accompanist at
the AIMS Institute in Graz, Austria, the Brevard Music Festival in North
Carolina, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, the Peabody Institute of the
Johns Hopkins University, and the Young Victorian Theatre in Baltimore.
She served as assistant music director of the Baltimore Opera Company, music
director of the Baltimore Opera Touring Company, assistant conductor and
chorus master for Washington Summer Opera, music director and conductor for
the Annapolis Opera, Maryland Lyric Opera, Brevard Music Festival, Opera
Americana in Virginia, the Washington Savoyards, Rep Stage, and the
Cumberland Valley Chamber Orchestra in Pennsylvania. A graduate
of Catholic University of America (Magna cum
Laude), Ms. Amato earned an MM
from the University of Houston (Magna cum Laude), and certificates in
lieder, opera, and chamber music from the American Institute of Musical
Studies, Graz, Austria. She lives in Baltimore with her husband Sam and
their three daughters.
